Basic Neuroscience – Why do we need to Know?

What is the latest research about brain and behavior? How can you use this knowledge in your daily life?

Have you ever wondered why psychotherapy works (or not)?

Did you know that one goal of therapy is to link different parts of the brain together (called “neural integration”)?
YES – this can help you work through trauma and get unstuck.

Our brains develop around our experiences. For example, if you were exposed to music then parts of your brain are wired for music.
What happen if you were raised in a stressful environment?

Do thoughts really cause things? What does early intervention mean and how can it help your child?

All of these issues will be discussed with my in studio guest, Holly Miller , Pasadena psychotherapist (www.hollytherapy.com – free DVD!),
Tuesday at 1:00 PM on KPFK, 90.7 FM

Why vote? (let me count the ways….)

Did you know that only about ½ of eligible voters have voted in federal elections? In 1960, it was 63 % and in 2000 only 51.3 % voted (Harris & Allen, 2003).

I believe we must vote to exercise our right to do so and we need to also lift the veil of secrecy around how our votes are processed.

If you saw the recent documentary screened last week on HBO, “Hacking Democracy”, your eyes have been opened and you may be wondering, “Why bother?”

The documentary pointed out that the computers that process 80 % of America ’s votes made by three main companies are easily tampered with in a way that cannot be traced. Individual counties across the country pay millions of dollars for these systems. If Bev Harris had not discovered the FTP site of one of the companies, the secrets of how these machines operate would still be a secret (Hacking Democracy, HBO, Oct., 2006).

In her book, “Black Box Voting”, Harris asks, “What would the founder of this country ask you to do?” In numerous quotes by J efferson and others, she offers the theme that our leaders are supposed to be accountable to us, the voters (2003).

Remember, one person can make a difference. Please vote and get involved in your community!!!!

Blessings,

Nita

October 31, 2006 - Today's Show

A special two part Halloween Show for you includes:

Jane Hersey, author of “Why Can’t My Child Behave?.” She will be discussing the Feingold Diet and how to keep kids “food safe” on the holiday.

Do you know why teachers call the day after Halloween the “worst day of the year?” YOU think it’s the sugar or the excitement – wrong answer! Ms. Hersey says we should read the tiny print on the candy wrappers and look for numbers. It is actually the synthetic food dyes that trigger behavior problems in children, including hives, swelling and respiratory problems.

Also, we will have Richard Salva, author of “Soul Journey” sharing his method of uncovering hidden past life clues from the costumes you wear on Halloween. Or, is it deja vu?

Mr. Salva calls himself the “Reincarnation Detective” – do you believe you have lived before? After 30 years of research, he will tell us what reincarnation is and what it is not.

Today is all about fun with your calls!!

Hi and welcome to my blog! If you are new, please join me to have fun, discuss ideas, and become more conscious….we have two segments today and in the first segment you can get a free book! Dr Marc Darrow is giving away, Prolotherapy; Living Pain Free. Learn how stimulating collagen growth rebuilds joints and ends pain!

If you enjoyed the Wayne Dyer interview (MP3), you’ll be happy to know that I will be talking with him on today’s show in the second segment! His latest book is titled, “Being in Balance: 9 Principles for Creating Habits to Match Your Desires”.

Here are some concepts from the book that we will be discussing:

1 – Is there a discrepancy between your dreams and your activities in support of those dreams?

2 – How do you act on the longing or heart’s desire to be what you’re supposed to be?

3 – Which universal law can you rely on to transform your life?

4 – Are you ready to shift your thinking and realize your dreams? How do you get started?

5 – Are you controlled by addictions – how can you be free? HINT: It’s all about realignment, love, releasing shame, and living from a new knowing. (see p. 105)

6 – How can you know when you have thoughts or actions that unbalance your desires?

One of my favorite quotes from Dr. Dyer’s book is: “There’s no such thing as stress, there are only people thinking stressful thoughts” (2006, p. 108) www.drwaynedyer.com

Dr. Dyer will join us at 1:30 pm , after we speak with Marc Darrow , MD, a board certified physiatrist. If you have muscle or joint pain you will not want to miss this segment and you can get his book for free during the show by calling his office at 310.231.7000 or 800 REHAB10 www.1800rehab10.com

Sex, Lies and Menopause by T.S. Wiley, et al

I have been studying this book and realize that the term medical science is an oxymoron. What I mean is that it is clear to me that medicine is an art, not a science. (Just try to get a medical doctor to admit that one!!).

The detailed research in this book will turn many of your accepted and conventional ideas or beliefs about women’s health completely upside down and hopefully get you thinking and dialoguing with others, men too!

Some of the areas to be discussed on today’s show include:

How have women unwittingly accelerated the aging process?
What are the ramifications of delaying pregnancy?
Can staying up late cause you to gain weight?
Are we aging faster than previous generations?
Is it true that you can’t fool mother nature – what does this mean?
What did the work of Charles Huggins really say about hormones and cancer?
Is the trade off for living longer, aging faster?

Please join me today at 1:00 pm (PST) on InnerVision when my guest T. S. Wiley debunks many myths about women’s health and explains the facts on natural hormone replacement. Remember we are streaming live on the web at www.kpfk.org.

Psychic or Intuitive?

What does it mean to be psychic? What does the word “psychic” mean? What is an intuitive? Have you known someone who paid lots of money for a psychic or felt taken advantage of by one?

What are you really looking for in your life that you think a psychic can provide for you?
I think people want a new direction, inner peace or to get unstuck.

On today’s show, we speak with Darrin Owens, author of Reader of Hearts: The Life And Teachings of a Reluctant Psychic.

We’ll ask him what it means to be a reluctant psychic and what we can do to improve our lives. Darrin writes about the difference between our mortal mind and our mystical mind – which do you think is your best friend?

Here is a review of the 7 Chakras from Darrin’s book (2006, p. 64) which will come in handy when you consider where your blocks may be coming from:

1st – at base of spine – red
2nd – sexual organs – orange
3rd – solar plexus – yellow
4th – heart/chest – green
5th – throat – blue
6th – forehead – indigo
7th – crown of head – violet

For the life issues and symptoms of blockage or imbalance, please read further. This is just to get you started.

Please join us today at 1:00 PST or on the web at www.KPFK.org.

What’s It All About?

One of the mystifying issues I have spent years pondering and talking about on the radio is consciousness.

How do we become more conscious?
What is the difference between consciousness and awareness?
Who am I?
Why am I here?

If you are interested in these questions, you will want to listen to today’s edition of Inner Vision with my guest, Steven Sadleir. He has taught self-realization to thousands of students in over 120 countries. Mr. Sadleir is also an author of many books and Director of the Self Awareness Institute in Laguna Beach, California.

Have you found peace within? Are you looking for bliss? Are you stuck looking for happiness form the outside in?

Join us today on InnerVision at 1:00 PM, PST on 90.7 FM or on line at www.kpfk.org, worldwide!

“By realizing this Divine presence within you, it opens up: it blooms like the thousand-petaled lotus.”

Stress and the Effects on Communication

A quick review of what stress is and how communication goes awry as a result will be the topic for our August 1st of “First Tuesday” on Inner Vision.

Our minds think stress if there is anything we’re worried about. It could be a health issue, family problem or difficulty at work.

However, our bodies experience stress as any CHANGE takes place in our lives. This includes happy things that occur as well as upsetting events. Stress takes place because it is the body’s de-compensation or wear and tear as we adjust to the continuously changing environment.

So, thinking about things or imagining about what might happen in the future is also perceived by the body as stressful. Pushing your body too hard, illness and environmental factors can cause changes in the body as well as, resulting in emotional stress.

Also keep in mind that emotional stress from arguments, conflicts, or other pressures can cause us to communicate in a less effective manner.

For example, Virginia Satir, a pioneer in family therapy, identified four styles of dysfunctional movements in response to stress (see “The New Peoplemaking”, 1988):

Placating
Blaming
Computing
Distracting

These are used to avoid, criticize, control or distract respectively, rather than talk through an issue until resolved.

Satir stated that the only way to communicate effectively is through leveling. This alleviates the need to use the four above mentioned dysfunctional communication modes and calls for careful listening, staying focused on one issue at a time and using “I” statements.

Here is a useful formula to use: (fill in the blanks)
“When you_________________, I feel______________________.
What I want/need is______________________________.

Tune in for more!

Is Honesty The Best Policy?

A caller recently lamented over his wife’s weight gain, confessing that he was no longer sexually attracted to her. I suggested he speak with her about it. He said he was afraid to hurt her feelings. “Even if you make it a health issue?” I asked.

What would you do if you were the husband? How would you feel if you were the wife? What will happen to this marriage? Is it a set up for an affair?

Is a little lie ever okay? Should you tell the complete truth even if someone’s feelings are at risk?

Author Brad Blanton, in his book “Honest To God”, co-authored with Neale Donald Walsch, talks about how people fear the intensity of their feelings. “We usually go to the level of emotional interpretation and try to “understand” our feelings as a way of avoiding having the feelings at the level of sensation in our body” (2002). If you are in your head interpreting, are you over intellectualizing to avoid feelings? Are you secretly angry with the person? Do you take yourself out of your feelings to stay in your comfort zone?

If you are afraid of your own feelings, then no wonder you are reticent to hurt someone else’s. The cost of little white lies, “cover ups” or protecting someone’s feelings could be the relationship.

I believe we have to start telling it like it is – one truth at a time. Stay in the conversation with someone until it is worked out. Ask for what you want. Stay consistent – keep your integrity – do what you say you are going to do. Then, the truth won’t be so scary.
